The Brief

A large country garden for a family with 4 young children. Several separate gardens to be designed within the larger garden including a woodland walk, a swimming pool with entertainment area and two bodies of water linked by a stream. The planting style is to reflect the layout and styles of the different areas. Lighting required throughout the major areas of the garden.

The Design

The design is complex in its requirements; creating several different gardens within the larger garden. Its intelligence lies in its ability to transition effortlessly between the different areas.

The gardens surrounding the property are formal in design. A path, bordered by a low growing parterre leads you through to the front. A large L shaped oak pergola, leads past the front garden to the sunny south-facing terrace at the back of the house. This is planted with sweet smelling French lavender and English roses. A sculpture sits at the end of the pergola as a focal point.

The terrace is raised, with steps leading down to an informal lawn.

The west-facing garden includes an arbour, which provides seating and a view through the large herbaceous boarders and knot gardens. Large topiary shapes on crooked stems sit amongst the flower boarders, adding a sense of playfulness to the formal design.

A path leads to the swimming pool and entertainment area. This includes a pool house, outdoor kitchen, and a lawned area with sunbeds, a BBQ and a place for dining. Pleached hornbeam trees enclose this area and offer a contemporary feel. This style is continued with the use of buff paving. The planting, too, is contemporary in its design. Swathes of grasses and clipped box balls. From this area a path leads through to the woodland walk.

The main lawn is reshaped into an informal design. It houses two ponds, situated at different levels within the garden. They are connected by a flowing stream and planted with large borders and aquatic plants. A summerhouse sits next to the top pond, allowing for scenic views. The lawn at the lower level of the garden develops into an infrequently mown grass path and wildflower meadow which leads to the lower level pond where a timber pontoon jetty allows for views across the wild flower meadow and the cascade water stream. The mown grass path then leads onto to a large meandering lawn.

This is a garden to truly enjoy, full of interest, atmospheric lighting, entertainment and beautiful seasonal flower displays.
